Rebekah McDaniel: Beauty

I WILL NOT GIVE UP

As I sit here on the mountain top
Rolling thunders that never stop.
Droplets of pain beneath my skin
Undoubtedly left by men.

I sit here all alone
In my words, I call it home.
Dark and gloomy, the rains may be
But in my soul a light I see

A strength that I bare
In a world that does not care.
Captured by the light
I will not give up this fight.

Beauty to me is conquering your fears, stand up against the flow of the crowd, taking your dreams and making them a reality. Beauty is the strength of your soul. The power with in you that takes you to the next level and fuels your desire for more. It is the passion in which we all hold.

Beauty, what is it? I think it can always be argued because of personal opinions and biases. There are few things though that no matter who you are take your breath away and I think anyone will agree that are beautiful. Grandness is usually the key for me, whether it be a huge mountain landscape, vast clear a calm oceans, weather fronts with huge clouds, or a clear view of the stars in the night sky. All things in nature are inspiring and incredibly beautiful to me. I saw some imagery from Ben Canales on G+ a while back and was enthralled with it. Now that I have some equipment that will allow me to do so I am going to start playing with some star photography and this is my first exploration into that.

I had the opportunity to photograph the beautiful and talented Abbey Jordan earlier this week.  She's a local comedian here in Denver and has quite a personality.  Her work is quite refreshing - it's packed full of new and unique style.

Abbey rocks it out in this commercial (spot her in the green hoodie):

Beauty in the eye of the beholder?  That's a bunch of crap.  From the day we are born, we are taught what beauty is.  Whether it be by our parents, our friends, or through televison.  So what is beauty?  And how do we know that it is truly beautiful?  For me, beauty is the inner peace I feel when I've accomplished a difficult goal, when I finished a quarter of school...without failing, and when I see my children accomplish their goals.  Beauty is something that will be different for each and every person.  It's your job to figure out what it means to you and how to achieve it.

Jacques Badon: Beauty

Sometimes, when living in a city like this, it's easy for a person like me to get caught up in the bullshit.  Sometimes, things get so messed up and crazy, I almost forget who I am, or what the hell it is I'm really doing here.  When your chips are down, and you stop feeling passionate about what you're doing, its easy to sit back and just forget that the world keeps on spinning, around and round.  It's sad to think how easy it can be to just sit there and forget about all the beautiful things that are out there that used to inspire you.  I've had that feeling many times throughout my life, but I've always been lucky, because no matter what happens, or how bad things get,  there's always this one last beautiful thought that passes through my mind: "Get your ass to the river!!!"

Everyone has a place in their life that will always be theirs to return to...  It doesn't really matter where or what it is.  Since I was born, I've lived on or near the river, and it will always be my life source.  There is more beauty in the river that I could ever hope for or imagine than anywhere else.  On the river there is so much time for thought, or words... and so much time to listen, or time to be heard.  I've learned a lot about life from the river.  Sometimes I live and work on the river when I guide during the summer, and the river is always boss.  Sometimes the river is a beast and bitter, and can sink it's teeth in deep.  I can't tell you how many times I've almost died on the river.  Hell, I almost drowned last week.  But I can say that it was always in a kayak, doing something foolish / fun???  Yet, no matter how close I've ever come to piping off on the river, nothing's ever made me feel more alive.  One of the things that I think is most beautiful about the river is that there is so much time for everything.  There's so much time for living, and yet so much time for dying.  Personally, I think death by river would be a beautiful way to go, however.  The beauty of a river can also wake you up from the dead.

The perfection and beauty of this insect is indescribable.  This photo was captured at The Butterfly Pavilion, in Westminster, Colorado where civilians can enter a magical world of butterflies flying freely around them.  I love the juxtaposition of the beautiful butterfly placed perfectly at the dying part of the leaf.  As he eats the leaf, his proboscis is perfectly curled, and the tip of his antennae appears to glow in delight.  These type of photographs are difficult to capture since you can't control the placement and movement of the butterfly.  I was lucky to capture this moment.

I'm not a perfect girl. My hair doesn't always stay in place and I spill things a lot. I'm pretty clumsy and sometimes I cry. My friends and I sometimes fight and maybe somedays nothing goes right.
When I think about it and take a step back, I remember how amazing life truly is and maybe, just maybe, I like being unperfect.
Beauty is the the innocence of a child. The curiousity of the world. The trust they have for the ones they know. They are learning and are not perfect...but who is?
