Heather Zindars: Beauty

The perfection and beauty of this insect is indescribable.  This photo was captured at The Butterfly Pavilion, in Westminster, Colorado where civilians can enter a magical world of butterflies flying freely around them.  I love the juxtaposition of the beautiful butterfly placed perfectly at the dying part of the leaf.  As he eats the leaf, his proboscis is perfectly curled, and the tip of his antennae appears to glow in delight.  These type of photographs are difficult to capture since you can't control the placement and movement of the butterfly.  I was lucky to capture this moment.

Old School: George Ferris

For almost 20 years, from the early 1940s to late in the 1950s, Film Noir (or "black film") swept Hollywood.  Film Noir is associated with low-key black and white filming that creates an atmosphere of dark and mysterious which results in loads of cinematic drama.  Interestingly, Film Noir is not technically a genre, it's more a description of the look and mood of the film.  From FilmSite.org:

"..early noir film-makers didn't even use the film designation (as they would the labels 'western' or 'musical'), and were not conscious that their films would be labeled noirs."

My image is inspired by The Big Sleep (1946) where Humphrey Bogart plays a private detective who gets entangled in a rich family's complex crime.

Old School: Moriah Gallagher

When it comes to architecture, barely any style could be considered more "old school" than the Greek Column, which is a crucial piece in any large Greek structure such as the Parthenon.  The classic style to shoot anything as massive and ancient is to shoot from as low of a vantage point as possible in order to make the structure seem as large as possible.  While this column is not from Greece, it shows the classicism of the style since it is incorporated in many modern homes and structures.

This week's concept was color and I wanted to go with a Chinese/Feng Shui type of theme only using white, gold and blue as the main colors.

I also took three different shots with different angles and perspectives 

(as in, the way you would look at it if you were in front of it, getting closer to see it clearer)

I was also messing around with Gimp and used a few filters (I'm trying to get more accustomed to it.)

when I was in the process of checking if my shots were in focus and whatnot.  

(Note: I don't own CS4/CS5 at the moment, which is why I have Gimp, 

I'd probably have Photoshop if I weren't a poor college student :( )
