Fusion - Danielle Mondragon

There is a building on 38th and Walnut that has been set on fire. Twice. Despite both of the blazes that were set the building still stands tall. It is a sort of eerie piece of art work with graffiti lined on the inside and outside walls, an open air ceiling with parts of walls still attached. While taking a walk I noticed a sticker on the light post. It created a fusion of ideas in my head that I haven't been able to get out. The building for me represents the idea of art and its impact upon my life. While the building has been set ablaze, it still remains to stand. Art for me is a journey that I hope to continue to pursue with a fiery passion and through the ups and downs, I hope that the fire within me doesn't burn itself out.

Fusion: Geoff Ridenour

I shoot both film and digital; from 35mm to large format 8x10 and from the iPhone 4 to medium format digital backs. However, it is where these two technologies meet that I have been focusing my personal work. The following photograph is part of an upcoming series exploring digital media captured and edited with the iPhone 4 then printed using the 19th century dry plate tintype process. I am shooting over the next two weeks and plan to start the darkroom work within the month.

Motion: Danielle Mondragon

The city never sleeps. When you live in a city like Denver you know that you will never be the only car on I-25 or I-70. Ever. You will never be the only person walking down the 16^th street mall. Life is a journey with a million destination points along the way and just as many connections or in some cases misconnections. I chose to shoot the city in motion in the evening. The streaks of cars on Speer Boulevard and I-25 could be carrying a businessman coming home to his family from a trip abroad. It could be the young couple just finishing up a nice dinner at one of Denver’s restaurants or it could be the twenty somethings on their way to the bar with the excitement of the possibility of making a personal connection. The motion of the continual arrivals and departures that weave our individual stories and connect us all.

What are these people doing? This was my first thought as I approached the 2011 Colorado Portuguese Water Dog Trials Saturday morning. It was my job to document the event as it unfolded over two days in Chatfield State Park. The beach, now a tent city was the staging grounds for the competitors. With over fifty dogs, owners and trainers all anxiously waiting for their turn in the spotlight. While there were four levels of dogs competing this weekend it was the working class that stole the show. The photograph above is of Saturday’s winner working dog Hook with owner and trainer Janet Creek. I had asked the organizers and competitors what they were looking for in the photographs I would be taking and almost everyone responded with "get the jump shots and you'll be fine...". Over the course of the morning, as lighting conditions changed I had one simple goal, to keep my shutter speeds fast enough to freeze the motion of the dogs as they launched from the boats.

The eyes are the window of the soul. -English Proverb.

As a photographer there is nothing more important than the ability to see, both with our eyes and more importantly the mind. Most people are born physically able to see. As light reflects off objects in our environment our eyes receive and transmit the signals to our brain. However, what happens from there is where we all become true individuals. Something in our mind takes on the job interpolating, translating and processing the information to create a unique vision of the world we live in. As a visual artist this is the true essence of my photography. It is my unique translation of light being focused through the lens, eye and mind to create a visual representation of my soul’s vision of the world around me.

This week’s concept shot comes out of the studio. In doing some research on contemporary advertising campaigns I came across 5 Gum by Wrigley. I wanted to make a photograph that would fit in with their current work. The advertisements contain a few common aesthetics; a clean, vibrant combination of photography and digital illustration. While I wasn't initially confident with the assigned topic of candy, I think it forced me to research an unfamiliar subject and push my creative boundaries.

Forget the coffee break. This is my ode to the days when all of your worries revolved around which crayon to color with, what sugar coated cereal to eat and which sandbox to play in. No adult responsibilities, bills, jobs, mortgage. Just a throw back to the days when you were allowed to look at the world through gumdrop colored glasses.

Tornado Forming Over Aurora, Co

As storms continue to advance on Denver; a large, dense cloud formation forms west of Buckley Air Force Base. The storm cell never fully formed, dissipating quickly and leaving Aurora residents untouched.
