Distortion: Valerie Morris

In most types of photography, distortion is unwanted. Sometimes it can be desirable because an artist can create art that is one of a kind. Distortion is alteration of an original object that could be hard to figure out what it was in the first place.

Distortion is similar to abstract because there isn’t a true reality to the image. When an image is being distorted, the meaning of the image becomes different. Distortion doesn’t have to be taken so literally but most of the time it is. Your perception and outlook could be distorting how you look at the scene or something you photographing could actually be distorting the image.

Movement: Valerie Morris

Time is a system of events that succeed one another as the past, present, or future. As Time is always moving forward, it is never going to stop or slow down, and there is never going to be a rewind button to push.

“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.”
Andy Warhol, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol

Our world is evolving every day. May it be new technology such as television, computers, cell phones, networks, and new discoveries in health care. Even Earth’s global climate is changing everyday because of human activities, and there are always physical signs of environmental changes all around us.

Color: Valerie Morris

Color can play an important role in the world we live in. Especially our food, we eat daily. Color can influence our thinking, change our actions, and cause reactions. When food looks pleasing, it can raise our blood pressure, and appetite. The opposite could suppress the urge to eat anything.

For example, red in foods are very intense and energetic. It increases blood pressure and stimulates appetite. Whereas blue is associated with, the mind, body, and can produce a calming effect while slowing the metabolism. Lastly, green is associated with nature, and being healthy. Decay: Valerie Morris

When hearing the word decay, most pictures are disgusting images. You wouldn’t think that anything beautiful could come from this word, but in some cases, you could be proven wrong.

I found inspiration to photograph urban decaying buildings from an article called 100 Captivating Examples of Urban Decay Photography. This article showed me some abandoned buildings or unkempt alley has beauty to be found.

For example, my photograph above is a building that has been abandoned. As of today, the white plaster of the building is tumbling off on to the cement. Revealing red bricks, which may have never been known if it were kept up to perfect condition.

Also to the right of the foreground, there is an image that appears to be a broken human hand. To me, the hand represents the role people have contributed to the carelessness we have shown this world we live in.

Abstract: Valerie Morris

Have you ever truly stopped and looked at what is around you? Our world is amazing and filled with many possibilities. If you would just take a few seconds in your busy schedule, and really looked at what you touch throughout the day. What would you see?

Would you see the ordinary object or would you see colors, textures, and shapes that appear repeatedly. If you can open your eyes to this, you just looked at the objects in an abstract way.

Abstract art can be the most ordinary objects, we see every day. However, they may not look like it. Truthfully, it’s not really about the objects. It’s about what the objects can create through design.
